Reducing Demands Not Expectations

Talking Autism: Parenting Your Unique Child - A podcast by Autism Consultancy International

In this episode Victoria discusses why it's important to look beyond a diagnosis of Autism or Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) to find the strategy that is right for the individual.  She focuses on different ways that parents can reduce the demands they place on their children whilst keeping their expectations high. From looking at the way requests are presented, to discussing different ways that more control can be given to young people in order to reduce their anxiety levels this is an episode packed full of strategies. Victoria, does more than just give strategies though. Each one is rooted in real life examples from a parent with practical experience of applying them in everyday life, and a teacher with 20 years experience of working with students with Autism.  She takes the opportunity to elaborate on why utilising the special interest of a young person with autism can be a particularly effective way of communicating with them, and how this along with the other techniques discussed can make parents appear more human and less like "demand machines."
