Brendan is the author of two books: Markets in Chaos: A History of Market Crises Around the World (published by Business Expert Press) and The Wandering Investor. We talk about Brendan’s book and research on market crises around the world. We start with the most recent global COVID pandemic and the market chaos that followed. We take a tour around the world, stopping by in Iceland, and taking a fresh look at what happened there over a decade ago. Icelanders became three times richer in three years as leverage, and banking led to trouble. Brendan shares stories of crises in Latin America and Asia. We have a longer conversation about the dangers of inflation, and specifically hyperinflation. Our trip around the world wouldn’t be complete without a stop in Africa. We both have great curiosity about the 1970s in the US, the Japanese stock market rise and fall in the 1980s. We both strongly believe that there is always a lot to learn from history, and past market crises can teach us a lot. They expand our imagination and show us how to navigate some more stormy seas.
