Beauty and the Beast has been interpreted by filmmakers many times, and although the most popular is probably the 1991 Disney movie, in 1946 French director Jean Cocteau put his own interpretation on film. Haunting and surrealistic, Beauty and the Beast marks an important point in French cinema history, having come just after the War when many filmmakers were finding their footing after the German occupation.  It's a well-loved classic, and the images will be hard to forget.
