Transcript:00:00:00JackYou're listening to the A-Z English podcast.00:00:13JackThe aid is English podcast. My name is Jack and I am one of the hosts of the podcast and today I'm doing a solo episode and this is truly a solo episode because it is just me talking to you.00:00:30JackAbout a topic.00:00:33JackAnd this will be.00:00:34JackA quick chat episode. We haven't done a.00:00:37JackQuick chat in.00:00:38JackA while and I want you to send me your.00:00:42JackComments about this topic because I'm curious to hear what you think about this topic and so the topic is.00:00:51JackOr the question I should say is.00:00:54JackDo you believe?00:00:58JackIn the idea of haunted objects.00:01:02JackSo do you believe in the idea of haunted objects?00:01:09JackAnd what that?00:01:10JackMeans is that do you believe that objects can possess or can have?00:01:18JackEvil spirits.00:01:21JackSo if you.00:01:24JackBring some kind of.00:01:26JackHaunted object some kind of object into your house that has an evil spirit.00:01:33JackIt can bring bad luck and cause mischief.00:01:39JackIn your life, in your home.00:01:42JackIn your relationships.00:01:45JackAnd the reason is this object. It has an evil spirit. It's haunted.00:01:51JackIt could be a doll, it could be a piece of furniture.00:01:55JackIt could be a piece of jewelry, like a ring.00:02:00JackOr a necklace.00:02:03JackThere are a number of horror movies that.00:02:09JackDeal with this.00:02:10JackTopic for example, I'm thinking of the.00:02:13JackMovie Annabelle and Annabelle is a doll.00:02:17JackBut she is but the doll is possessed by an evil spirit.00:02:24JackAnd the evil spirit can cause harm and.00:02:28JackAs I mentioned before, mischief and terror.00:02:31JackFor the people that.00:02:33JackAre around the doll that that have the doll.00:02:37JackAnd so.00:02:39JackThe question today.00:02:40JackIs do you believe in the idea?00:02:44JackOf haunted objects.00:02:47JackAnd I'm going to. I'm not going to just.00:02:50JackThrow away this question and.00:02:51JackSay no, flat out.00:02:54JackI'm gonna. I'm gonna really think about it and share with you my, my honest feelings about this topic.00:03:04JackAnd there there's before I start there's there's kind of an.00:03:11JackAspect of this that I want to share with you and that's that I live in South Korea. I'm an English teacher.00:03:17JackBut I live in.00:03:18JackIn work in South Korea.00:03:21JackAnd I've lived.00:03:22JackIn Asia, for about half my life.00:03:25JackSince I was about 23.00:03:29JackYears old, I have lived in an Asian country.00:03:35JackThailand and South Korea.00:03:40JackAnd I know that definitely.00:03:42JackThere is a belief in Asia that.00:03:46JackAnd this is.00:03:48JackNot exactly held by everyone, I mean in maybe long, a long time ago, people believed this.00:03:56JackUM that?00:03:59JackEvil spirits do exist, and that we need to ward off and to ward off evil spirits means to to push them away, to keep them away, to ward off evil spirits. You would do certain things you could do. There were certain practices or.00:04:17JackThe way that.00:04:18JackA building is designed. The architecture was meant to ward off evil spirits.00:04:27JackI think that that idea is still.00:04:29JackThe idea of of objects having evil spirits does exist today because.00:04:37JackLiving in Korea I've I've got. I've found a lot of.00:04:42JackHow can I say this without sounding strange?00:04:46JackThe chair that I'm sitting on right now, the computer chair I have, I found it some outside. Somebody was throwing it away, and it's a perfectly good computer chair.00:05:00JackAnd in America, if somebody were to put this outside.00:05:06JackAn American would grab it in.00:05:08Jack5 seconds and take it home and use it.00:05:11JackBut in Korea I find a lot of.00:05:13JackPeople don't want to use.00:05:16JackDon't want used furniture?00:05:18JackThey, you know, they think it's.00:05:21JackAnd I think that it comes from the idea of they don't want to bring something mysterious into the household, which could be a, an, an evil spirit, a bad spirit or bad luck.00:05:37JackThe the fact that I'm sitting on.00:05:39JackA used piece of furniture tells you that, obviously.00:05:43JackI don't believe in.00:05:46JackHaunted objects. I don't believe that objects can possess evil spirits because I have two computer chairs.00:05:56JackIn my office here.00:05:58JackAnd they're both.00:06:01JackAnd as we say in English, one man's trash is another man's treasure.00:06:08JackAnd so there are two perfectly good perfectly clean.00:06:16JackComputer chairs.00:06:18JackThe desk chairs and.00:06:21JackI found them outside and somebody was going to throw them away and to me.00:06:27JackThe idea of throwing away a good chair so it can just go into.00:06:33JackA landfill, a pile of garbage.00:06:36JackAnd sit there.00:06:37JackFor 1000 years, why not use it? You know, recycle.00:06:42JackI believe in recycling, so I have.00:06:47JackA computer.00:06:48Jack2 computer desk chairs that are recycled.00:06:52JackAnd I've got something else too.00:06:55JackI'm trying to think of what there's something else that I'm I'm forgetting that I I found.00:07:02JackOhh I have a an.00:07:04JackExercise machine. Somebody threw away a perfectly good stationary bicycle and it's a.00:07:10JackBicycle that you?00:07:12JackYou don't go anywhere. It's not a real bicycle.00:07:15JackIt's a stationary stationary means not moving.00:07:19JackAnd it's a stationary bicycle and you ride it for exercise. So I can watch TV and ride my stationary bicycle and exercise and burn calories.00:07:32JackAnd someone threw away a perfectly good one.00:07:36JackProbably because it was they were not using it. It was in their apartment and it was taking up space. And so they put it outside. I saw it, I brought it home. I cleaned it up. I fixed a couple things on it and now it's works perfectly well.00:07:58JackI have these used.00:08:00JackObjects that I brought into my house.00:08:06JackYou know, some Korean people would think I'm crazy, they would think.00:08:10JackHow could you take a risk?00:08:12JackAnd bring in.00:08:14JackSome kind of bad spirit.00:08:17JackWe're unlucky, spirit.00:08:19JackAnd I just don't think I don't believe in that. I believe objects are just objects, they're just made of atoms.00:08:30JackAnd they they don't possess any sort of spirit or essence. They're just things.00:08:38JackAnd they cannot.00:08:41JackHurt you by themselves? I mean, someone could pick up the chair and they could hit me with the chair and that would hurt me. But really, that's the person doing it, not the chair. The chair is just a tool. It's just an object. Same with the stationary.00:08:58JackLike so. Yeah. So so my answer and this is I'm giving you the long answer here is that I think.00:09:07JackI think that idea of haunted objects is actually kind of a bad thing, because it stops us from using from recycling. You know, there are a lot of lot of times people throw away good stuff and it just goes into a landfill and it just pollutes the planet.00:09:28JackWhereas another person could use that object and so I really, you know, part of part of me.00:09:36JackEnjoys recycling because it's free, right? I get a free chair or two free chairs and a free stationary bike.00:09:46JackThose are.00:09:47JackCan be expensive objects.00:09:51JackI got it for.00:09:52JackFree. So that makes me happy. I saved money.00:09:57JackBut the other half of me is happy because these objects are not.00:10:03JackIn the ground somewhere.00:10:05JackJust polluting the earth with plastic and garbage.00:10:09JackAnd they're actually being used and I'm using them here.00:10:15JackIn my house at my desk, I'm sitting on this chair.00:10:20JackAnd it's very comfortable.00:10:22JackAnd so.00:10:24JackI I think that actually the idea of haunted objects has a kind of negative impact on society.00:10:32JackBut I would love to hear what you guys think. Am I crazy for?00:10:39JackLiking used objects that could be haunted.00:10:44JackIf you believe.00:10:44JackIn that thing, that sort of thing.00:10:47JackAnd I would love to know.00:10:48JackWhat you think so?00:10:51JackLeave a comment on our website A-Z englishpodcast.com.00:10:56JackSend me an e-mail A-Z [email protected]:11:00JackOr join our awesome WhatsApp group if you join the WhatsApp group, you can join the A-Z English Podcast Chat group.
