In this episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Xochitl and Jack discuss phrasal verbs which include the verb “do.” Transcript:00:00:00JackYou're listening to the A-Z English podcast.00:00:15JackWelcome to the A-Z English podcast. My name is Jack and I'm here with my co-host social. And today we are going to do a language tips episode and we're going to do some 3 phrasal verbs that use the verb do.00:00:30JackAnd the first one is to do away with Xochitl. What does it mean to do away with something?00:00:39XochitlYou will know something.00:00:40XochitlIs to get rid of it.00:00:44XochitlEssentially so. Ohh, did you hear that McDonald's did away with the Mcrib on their menu? Ohh, no. That was my favorite menu item. It's basically McDonald's. Discontinued or got?00:00:50JackRight.00:00:57XochitlRid of that product.00:01:00XochitlYes, I think that's essentially what it means.00:01:03JackI have a good one. We did one A-Z English news story and then we quit so we could say we decided to do away with A-Z English news, you know.00:01:17XochitlRight. Yeah, it is. In this current events is no more. We have done away with it, yeah.00:01:22JackRight.00:01:25JackYeah, we, we quit it to quit. Something do away with it.00:01:29XochitlIt said something to get rid of something. Discontinue something. Yeah.00:01:32JackRight.00:01:33JackExactly. Now what about do over to do do something over?00:01:40XochitlDo something over is to give it another shot. As we were talking about in our sound very episode. Give it another try or just simply do it again and usually you want to do over when you fail. So let's say you're on cheerleading tryouts.00:01:59XochitlAnd you, you know, we're supposed to do some kind of flip in the air and instead you tripped and fell flat on your face. And they're like, OK, you're out of here and you're like, no, give me a do over. I swear I can do it this time.00:02:11XochitlThat would be.00:02:13XochitlA do over.00:02:15JackYeah, a do over right and that would be a noun, right? Because that's a thing, like the thing that you do. And then if we want to use it as a verb, you have to put something in the middle between do and over. So if you, if you if I gave you a homework assignment and then you gave it to me and I looked at it and I go.00:02:30XochitlRight.00:02:32JackThis homework assignment is not good enough. You need to do it over means you need to do it again. Do it over. Yeah, good. OK.00:02:42XochitlRight, right.00:02:44발표자Alright, I.00:02:45JackYeah, like that cause we use both, right? A do over is really like when kids are playing games and stuff, there's like no do over do over do over, yeah.00:02:51XochitlYeah, yeah, yeah. I think that's really cute. One. Yeah. It's. We haven't said one time. It's like the multiverse. Idioms are like the multiverse of.00:03:01XochitlEnglish because there's many different meanings to 1 idiom sometimes, which I think is neat.00:03:07JackAll right, so so I've got one more for us here. This one is do without what does it mean to do without something?00:03:15XochitlTo do about something is to make do, or essentially to substitute it. You're OK without that, so in the.00:03:26XochitlEpisode or an episode where we talked about song lyrics where Ariana Grande is talking about breaking free from her relationship. She can do without that relationship. She's better off without that relationship. UM, another example would be, let's say that you're cooking something and you don't have any garlic powder.00:03:47XochitlAnymore. But you have fresh garlic, so you just mince that and add it to the dish you did without the garlic powder because there was something else to substitute.00:03:57JackAgain, I've got one sentence here. It's like we forgot to buy milk, so we'll have to do without it for tonight. You know, it's like, yes, tonight we have to do without the milk because we forgot to buy it. We don't have it. So, you know. And you could also, sometimes you could say, like, you know.00:03:58XochitlSo this.00:04:17JackYou know, like, like I'm trying to think like, if you're eating dinner with someone or something or you, your, your mom packs you a lunch for school or something. And she says, Ohh, no, I don't have any more apple juice. And you say that's OK, mom, I can do without. I can do without it.00:04:36XochitlRight.00:04:38XochitlWell, I don't need it. I don't need it. We're OK for tonight. We don't need it for tonight. Let's just get on with it without it.00:04:48XochitlYeah. All right, well, those are phrasal verbs for today.
