These are often specific and urgent – so we’ll be talking with a professional at the forefront of the issue.In today's episode, Wendy Thorogood, Chair of the Association of Child Protection Professionals, talks to Dr Peter Sidebotham about his work on the Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel. With a discussion on their latest research on safeguarding children at risk from sudden unexpected infant death.Dr Peter Sidebotham is a retired Consultant Paediatrician and Emeritus Professor of Child Health at the University of Warwick’s Medical School. As an academic paediatrician he specialises in child protection and was the designated doctor for child protection and for child death review in Warwickshire. Peter’s research includes studies on unexpected child deaths including sudden infant death syndrome, and work on child death review and child maltreatment. He has worked on several national analyses of Serious Case Reviews, is the author and editor of three books and several book chapters and has published extensively on child abuse and child death reviews.  Peter is a co-editor of the Association’s journal Child Abuse Review. As well as being on the Boards of Trustees for the Association of Child Protection Professionals and the Lullaby Trust.More recently, he is a member of the National Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel.Wendy Thorogood is a retired Designated Nurse Consultant for children. She trained at St Guy's hospital in London, specialising in child and adult nursing, intensive care and cardiac and renal transplants.Wendy delivered the national leadership programme for safeguarding for the Department of Health and worked directly with the NHS Confederation in relation to current changes; providing assurance that current and future providers of services are compliant in relation to safeguarding national and local standards;working with Lead Commissioners and the performance team to develop agreed key performance indicators and safety metrics for providers; identifying and taking appropriate action on key risks and issues across commissioned services that may affect safeguarding of children, young people.She is currently the chair of the Association of Child Protection Professionals.Would you like to learn more from this discussion?
