In South Africa, learner transport remains a significant challenge, particularly in rural areas. According to the Statistics South Africa General Household Survey 2022, over two-thirds (66,5%) of learners walked to school, with Limpopo, Free State and Mpumalanga being the most common areas where children walk long distances to school. How does this affect a child’s access to education and ability to perform well in school? What happened to government-funded school transportation?
