South Africa is considered to be the rape capital of the world with 10 818 rape cases reported in the first quarter of 2022. The rate at which women are killed by intimate partners in this country is five times higher than the global average. In September 2021, three new laws were passed with the aims of improving the criminal justice system's response to GBV; enhancing protection for survivors; and strengthening prevention strategies. In addition, President Cyril Ramaphosa pledged that the national government would earmark R1. 6 billion to counter GBV. Was that ever achieved? We’re there any significant work done to show that there is work being done to reduce or eradicate this scourge?
