Isabelle Eberhardt (1877–1904) was a Swiss-born writer, traveler, sensualist and mystic who defied societal norms to live as a nomad in North Africa. She rejected European aristocratic life in favor of the desert, where she dressed as a man, converted to Islam, and immersed herself in Bedouin culture. A fearless wanderer and writer, she chronicled the beauty and brutality of her existence, embracing reinvention as a way of life. Her radical freedom made her a threat to colonial powers and outlaw, yet she remained devoted to the open road and the pursuit of self-determination.
