The case was initially ruled a suicide however an internal affairs investigation was opened and led to the resignation of Matthew Farwell, his twin William Farwell and Deputy Chief Richard Devine, all prior to them being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.On June 18th, 2024 a pathologist hired by Birchmore’s family determined that Sandra Birchmore died by homicide, not suicide. The pathologist was hired in relation to the family's wrongful death action against the department and the officers who had resigned.On August 27th, 2024, former police officer, Matthew Farwell, was arrested for the murder of Sandra Birchmore and charged with killing a witness or victim.
