In today’s episode, HR expert Amanda King gives you four steps to being a rock star engineering job candidate. Here Are Some of the Key Points Discussed About the 4 Steps to Being a Rock Star Engineering Job Candidate With HR Expert Amanda King: Step 1 | Who you are – Identify your values and your priorities Make a decision about targeting what engineering companies you want to work for as opposed to what jobs you want to get. Understand your ideal situation, ask yourself which parts of the job make you unhappy or uncomfortable. Identify what is important to you, think about the career paths you have access to even before building your resume. Step 2 | Using your network – Leveraging your network (i.e. through LinkedIn) to identify the best engineering companies and other engineering career opportunities. Have a specific resume for every engineering job that you apply for. When you are trying to get an engineering job, you’re essentially a sales person and your product or service is yourself. The more that you can do to show that person or engineering company that they need your product or service, then higher are the odds that they are actually going to purchase it or hire you. Step 3 | Resume preparation – Make sure that your resume is tailored to a job posting, same type of skill sets that the engineering company is looking for. Look at the job postings, make sure that you put those key words all throughout your resume. Ways to compose/present your resume: By Chronology By skill sets By achievements Step 4 | Taking action – putting all these steps together to make a maximum impact every single time for the key company you are applying for. Putting together the values and priorities sheet (what’s important to you as an engineering job candidate) Find out through your network if there are engineering companies that meet those goals that you have, the values and culture that you want to work in Starting to build a resume and tailor it around those engineering jobs and opportunities using keywords in your resume, making sure that it is tailored to every opportunity that you apply for Follow up – pay attention to ways you can follow up on your resume that go beyond the simple email (personalized follow up using YouTube videos) More details in the episode… In the Take Action Today segment of the show, we give you some advice on how you can figure out your next best engineering career path move. “One important key to success is self-confidence.
