Speaker Lisa Ann Fontana is the author of Me, The People. She didn’t cast her first vote for anything until she turned 35 years old. She tried to buy a book to teach her about politics or government so she could vote with confidence, but the bookstore shelves were lined with negativity, and all of them played the blame game. Instead, she researched it herself until she became the expert, and now she shares her expertise with the other 92 million people who might be looking for it too. Using her background as a professional actor, Lisa Ann created the character Citizen Cupcakes and designed ‘Welcome Parties’ to help current non-voters get Comfy In Their Country. Her focus is on putting democracy back where it belongs – In the hands of you and Me, The People. Our education system doesn't train citizens in civics, community, citizenship or civility while simultaneously, our culture is geared to shame people for what they do not know an call them apathetic and bad Americans. It's wrong. It's easily fixed and it's why I do what I do. What is the solution? To step away from a 2 party system, receiving training in civics, civility, citizenship and community and use that training to serve democracy. Connection through country is tremendously bonding. Before COVID-19, Lisa Ann's favorite in person welcome parties were families and communities. Block Parties or house parties, families got comfy in their country and felt like they were part of something and had untapped value that they could pour into their country, in their own way and on their own terms.
