From Hawaii, Katie talks to three organizers who are protecting the water and future of Hawaii as well as organizing for its independence: Healani Sonoda-Pale, Dani Espiritu & Mikey Inouye. Healani Sonoda-Pale is a citizen leader of Ka Lāhui Hawaiʻi a native initiative for self-determination and self-governance. She was born and raised on the island of O'ahu where her ancestors lived from time immemorial. For over 25 years Healani has served as an educator who has taught at Hawaiian immersion preschools and Hawai'i high schools and colleges for over 25 years. Currently, she is an outspoken advocate for the protection of Hawaiian lands, water, ocean resources and marine life, and iwi kūpuna. Healani sits on various community boards and is a member of the O'ahu Water Protectors, a group of leaders who are calling for the shut down of the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility. Dani Espiritu is a Kanaka Maoli educator from Kāneʻohe, Oʻahu currently living in Waimalu, where her mother's ʻohana is from. She is a member of the Oʻahu Water Protectors and is also dedicated to the restoration of loʻi kalo (irrigated taro fields) and traditional food systems. Mikey Inouye is an independent filmmaker and community organizer with O’ahu Water Protectors and the Shut Down Red Hill Mutual Aid Collective.
