Standing Up and Walking Out on Abusers and Narcissists with Beverly Engel
The Love Fix - A podcast by Sherry Gaba and Carla Romo
Categories:
Sherry kicks off this week talking about how great exercise and movement have been for her mental health, and Carla couldn’t agree more. They take a Love Fix question about if it’s ever a good idea to take back a cheater, and then welcome psychotherapist Beverly Engel to the show. Beverly specializes in abuse recovery and is the author of 23 self help books and has been on Oprah! Starting over and many other TV programs throughout the years. Beverly talks about the difference between what she calls intentional and unintentional abuse, some red flags of both in dating, and gives her advice to those out there dating after an abusive relationship. She also talks with Sherry and Carla about how the way our date treats the wait staff matters much more beyond politeness. What You’ll Hear In This Episode: The gyms may still be closed or you may be shaking off the quarantine hibernation, but whatever it is - just move your body in some way every day! Working out can do wonders for not only your physical health but your mental health. A Love Fix question on how to know when to give someone a second (or third) chance after they cheat. The difference between what Beverly calls intentional and unintentional abuse. The difference between a narcissist and abusive partner, and how we can distinguish between the two. When is it time to say enough is enough when dealing with a narcissist? Signs of emotional abuse, even when it’s sneaky. When you feel small and confused, it’s very hard to stand up for yourself and confront the abuser. What is Beverly’s advice for those feeling weak and unwanted? Can you repair emotionally abusive relationships? Resources to sign up for Beverly’s Hope For Healing Program, along with ways to work with Sherry and Carla on overcoming codependency and gaining confidence. The three avenues to begin breaking away from codependent abuse: speak up, do something separate, and seek support. Take your time. Make sure you are healed and don’t just jump in a relationship after another. Trust your instincts and trust your gut. Most women don’t trust their instincts and go slow. Tweetables: “You don’t have to be a narcissist to be abusive”. - Carla “The rule of a narcissist is that they really don’t care that much about you.” - Beverly “Most emotional abusers are very good at deflecting and pointing out that you’ve done the same thing.” - Beverly “Standing up is crucial, if you can.” - Beverly “You need to see yourself as an equal to any potential partner.” - Beverly Connect with Us!
