It’s been 17 days since the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood triggered Israel’s punishing bombardment of Gaza. Thousands are now dead in Gaza and Israel without a clear end in sight to the bloodshed. As the world looks on in horror, we must not forget the decades of history that have brought us here. Israel has held Gaza under siege for the past 17 years, sealing off 2 million people in an open-air prison. At the same time, Israel’s democratic institutions have eroded and mutated into a theocratic fascism.
