The long roots of Pakistan's political crisis

Since 2022, the politics of Pakistan have been rocked by a struggle for power centered around former prime minister Imran Khan. Khan, who was ousted from office by a parliamentary no-confidence motion in April 2022, has alleged that his removal from office was orchestrated at the behest of the US government. This January, Khan was sentenced to 10 years in prison for leaking government documents as part of his effort to prove US involvement in his ouster. Khan's saga has ignited mass protests across Pakistan over the past two years. Despite being imprisoned during national elections this February, Khan's political party, PTI, won more parliamentary seats than any other political party.
