During the 1980s he moved into record production working with such acts as Any Trouble, Dr Feelgood, Makin’ Time, Billy Bremner (Rockpile) and the Long Ryders. Birch has written articles for Mojo and other music magazines and published three books: No Sleep Till Canvey Island – The Great Pub Rock Revolution; Ian Dury – The Definitive Biography, and Cruel To Be Kind – The Life & Music of Nick Lowe.
