The Coffee Run Ep531 - I thought today I’d share with you WHY I play Roller Derby. I mean, it’s not a ‘common’ sport, right? I remember in 2013 when I was asked the question “What do you do for fun?” I nearly choked on the drink I was drinking. I was happy to answer any and all questions about business, what I helped people with, how I did that. I could talk for hours about work. I could talk about my family. My corporate career and the transition to my own business. But FUN.. HA! my answer was “My business is the fun that I have. I don’t have time for anything else”. And I didn’t believe that I did. I was working 12+ hours per day trying to get this thing flying and hit revenue goals. I was travelling all the time. My husband was basically not home for half the year while the grape season was happening. My kids were all little (3 kids at ages 11, 6 and 4). Life was insanely busy! And I was determined to do whatever it took to get to where I wanted to be. It was suggested that perhaps this was not a good long term stragegy! Hahahaha!!! I agreed. And we talked about how I could have more fun in my world. My mentor at the time was learning to play Roller Derby and she described amazingly! it was like flying on wheels. You get to hit other people with your body. You get to skate super fast. It’s like the most amazing adrenalin rush you could ever imagine. You get fit. You make new friends. FUN!! So I gave it a go!!!! I’ve skated since 2013. I had around 18 months off a few years ago because I needed some time out. And I came back in 2018 with gusto!! Why Roller Derby? Because you can’t think about anything else while you’re out there. It’s one of the most welcoming, inclusive sports I know of. You work out. It feels like flying!
