As many of you may know, back in my teens and 20s, I was an athlete. I competed in running and then later as a triathlete. But you also may know that I have insulin resistance. If you know anything about insulin resistance and the way that most athletes eat - like the electrolyte gels and a fair amount of carbs so that we have that fuel to burn. So how did I go about managing my PCOS and still perform well athletically.Clearly if your PCOS symptoms are still present, we need to figure out WHY this is happening and address YOUR root cause. I’ve had a number of you tell me you’re at a crossroads because you obviously want to perform well but you also know that your insulin resistance is something you need to address before it gets worse - so I talk about that in this episode because I’ve been exactly where you were. The other topic that has popped up a lot recently - and it’s a topic that really should be talked about more - is PCOS and eating disorders.Eating disorders do not discriminate - 20% of women with PCOS have disordered eating. They also found an approximate 18% of women with PCOS suffering with binge eating disorder. It’s something that really isn’t talked about enough - so I wanted to address it here and discuss what I think is the best way to tackle this along with addressing your PCOS, because I know a lot of people can relate to this. This episode is for you if:You’re an athleteYou don’t know whether you should focus on eating for your insulin resistance or your sportYou’re worried that if you eat for your insulin resistance that your performance will sufferYou’ve been told you have to watch your calories because even though you’re training you’re still gaining weightYou have or are currently struggling with disordered eating and have PCOSSome things we cover in this episode:My story as an athleteEndurance sports and insulin resistancePCOS and disordered eating / abnormal eating patternsBinge Eating Disorder (BED)Links to our programs:The PCOS ProtocolEggducatedReferences and Resources:Increased risk of disordered eating in polycystic ovary syndromeAmanda’s story with PCOS and binge eating disorder (Season 1 Episode 4)
