Patrick Montgomery: From The Army to Wagyu: Founder @ KC Cattle Company

The POZCAST: Career & Life Journeys with Adam Posner - A podcast by NHP Talent Group, Adam Posner

Patrick Montgomery is a combat veteran and founder of the Kansas City Cattle Company, a veteran-owned and operated family business dedicated to producing the finest, USDA-certified hormone-free Wagyu beef. Patrick founded the company in honor of his brother-in-law, also a First Ranger Battalion member, who was killed in action in 2011. Patrick decided not to let the tragic loss become a crutch for inaction and destructive behavior, but rather to serve as motivation to build a dream-worthy of his memory. With the beef shortages caused by the pandemic combined with the recent increase in education around Wagyu beef amongst the average consumer, Patrick and KCCC have hit the ground running with some of the best beef money can buy. This Episode’s Heavy-hitters: - After Patrick went back to school for Animal Science, he interviewed for a security consulting company. When he asked them what they did on the day-to-day and they answered “convince corporate we’re worth paying for” he knew the corporate world wasn’t for him and decided to start KC Cattle Company. - When he first started KCCC, Patrick had to spend a lot of time educating restaurants, consumers, and especially the banks granting him business loans what Wagyu beef was. Today, most people have at least heard of Wagyu and the market is exploding. - One of KCCC’s first huge breaks was when foodandwine.com published an article about their Wagyu hotdogs called “We Found a Hotdog That Tastes Like Steak”. At the time, they had 35 packs of hotdogs in stock, and overnight they had 7,500 orders placed. - After losing money on the first rush from that article and the surrounding press, KCCC gained over 15,000 loyal customers that would come back and continue to purchase their Wagyu products. - Patrick has adopted the philosophy to always try and take one thing away from everything he reads or listens to. For him, he hopes that people listening to this episode will think about pursuing entrepreneurship because he believes the world needs more entrepreneurs.
