While between 85-90% of a wind turbine is already widely deemed to be recyclable, turbine blades remain the stubborn final step in creating a sustainable supply chain in the UK that can extend to more advanced circular economy practices. These include extending components (through refurbishment, for example), reuse and remanufacturing, as well as designing out waste and tough-to-recycle materials from the start. If you’re a regular listener, you’ll remember that we discussed visions for creating a circular economy in the wind sector in our November episode. The topic has generated so much interest, that we’d like to revisit it - this time widening the focus to bring in experience and views from other industries. Helping our Project Engineer, Lorna Bennet, disentangle topics like composite recycling, the more sustainable materials of the future and lifetime extension of industrial assets are two leading experts in sustainability from the Catapult network. - Lucy Edge, Chief Operating Officer of the Satellite Applications Catapult - Graeme Cruickshank, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) which is part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult
