This week, Jacki and Lyle are delighted to be joined once again by published author and Political Editor of The Sunday Times - Caroline Wheeler. Caroline returns to discuss the release of her new book, 'Death In The Blood', which tells the story of the NHS infected blood scandal through the eyes of the victims themselves, with references to government documents and court transcripts from the scandal. In a compelling episode, Caroline outlines the extraordinary extent of the scandal, and the story of how she came to report on it right at the beginning of her journalistic career. Caroline has continued to report on this story throughout her career, from her days as part of the team at the Sunday Mercury in Birmingham, right the way through to her work with The Times and The Sunday Times, where 'Death In The Blood' has been serialised recently. She opens up about how a phone call from Mick Mason, one of the victims of the scandal, was the beginning of a journey that has seen her investigate the stories of thousands of other victims of this disaster, many of whom have now sadly died as a result. Caroline also discusses the toll writing the book has taken on her personally, particularly in the face of backlash from certain sections of the community affected by the scandal, and how she felt compelled to turn the book launch, which Jacki attended, into more of a campaign rally to bring the scandal to the attention of a wider audience. The likes of Andy Burnham, Penny Mordaunt, and Diana Johnson have all thrown their support behind a campaign for justice and compensation for the victims, with Burnham himself writing that the book 'should rock Whitehall to its foundations'.
