177 Why an early dementia diagnosis matters, with Dr Ben Hicks

Chatting to me today is Dr Ben Hicks, Research Fellow at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. I first met Ben 5 years ago and invited him to be on the panel of one of our first Retirement Café events. Back then he was working hard to change the perception that dementia is no longer a death sentence in his role as psychologist and researcher with Bournemouth University Dementia Institute. Although dementia is one of the most common and serious conditions society faces today with more than 800,000 people affected in the UK, Ben believes that with the right research technology and care, dementia sufferers can live well with the disease for many years. As Co-ordinator of the DETERMIND research programme, Ben explains how the project looks at why care for dementia patients is unequal and the impact this has upon people’s health, level of comfort and happiness. Ben also shares some of his research findings and what this could mean for the future of care.
