Stewart Kwoh is a nationally recognized leader and expert in race relations, Asian American studies, nonprofit organizations and philanthropies, civil rights, and legal services. He co-founded Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Los Angeles and the Asian American Education Project. He shares why learning AAPI history in school is so important and about the wonderful curriculum, the Asian American Education Project provides for teachers. Stewart was kind enough to share some of the painful memories of working on the case for the murder of Vincent Chin. I could have listened to Stewart school me on AAPI history all day. This is why I urge you to check out the website and learn something new today. I was fascinated to learn that 69 years before Brown v. Board of Education, the Tape v. Hurley case was one of the earliest civil rights decisions against racist policies segregating students based on race. I also learned how the 1965 immigration law changed and corrected historic wrongs stemming from the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. How are we to right the wrongs of the past if we do not learn our history? Asian American history is American history. I’m grateful to Stewart and Pat Kwoh for the work they are doing at the Asian American Education Project and am hopeful that here in Florida our teachers will soon be utilizing their resources and including AAPI history in our education curriculum. I’m excited to announce that our bill HB281 and SB490 has been filed. Now we need your support! If you know anyone in Florida- please ask them to sign onto our petition and use our tool kit to write their legislators to cosponsor and vote yes for HB281 and SB490 I’m loving these conversations and hope you are too.
