81. Phil Chen, bassist, on music and Jamaican culture

Phil Chen is a well-known Jamaican bassist who now lives in Los Angeles. He was one of England’s most utilized session bassists during the 1970s and 1980s, including Jeff Beck, and the Rod Stewart band, but is probably best known for his later work with The Doors. He has also played with high profile musicians like Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Elton John, BB King, The Skatalites, Chuck Berry, and Bob Marley to name a few.  I call him “Uncle Phil” and was thrilled to have him join me today with his banjo! My uncle and mom used to jam with him in Jamaica. We discuss his incredible music career and the history of Jamaican music. Prepare for another heavily Jamaican accented episode as we slip in and out of patois, staying true to the culture. I am so proud of his work in the industry, as is the Jamaican government, awarding him the Order of Distinction.  This award is conferred upon citizens of Jamaica who have rendered outstanding and important services to Jamaica, or to distinguished citizens of a country other than Jamaica.
