The Definition of An Independent Artist is Changing

The definition of what it means to be an "Independent Artist" is apparently changing and the new parameters of the defining qualities are not necessarily something I agree with. Are the "Independent Artists" that have millions of dollars to spend on their career, pay major labels to service, distribute, market and promote their music really independent artists? According to the author of 'How To Make It In The New Music Business', they are. I disagree.
