563: Music For The Soul With Jade Berry

The Tao of Self-Confidence - A podcast by Sheena Yap Chan - Tuesdays

Jade Berry is a singer/songwriter and a social media influencer.  Music wasn’t just a source of passion for Jade Berry, it was a means for survival. Born in China, Jade would be put up for adoption but life would take an dark turn as she was placed in an abusive situation. She moved more than 60 times into various foster care homes to escape the trauma and it was during these turbulent times she discovered her love for music. She would find herself surrounded by people who allowed her unbelievable access to various music genres, styles, and techniques. She began studying classical music and became heavily influenced by Hip-Hop and R&B music as she identified with the pain and struggle depicted in these songs. At age 14, she was accepted into the Creative Writing and Opera program at Orange County High School of Arts where she would begin to develop her vocal skills by observing rehearsals of other musicians and copying their techniques. Her dedication would pay off when she was selected as a Horatio Alger National Scholar and received a full ride to University of Redlands. Her passion began to suffer as she struggled to make a career out of music until she was diagnosed with Primary Mediastinal Diffuse Large B Cell Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. During her grueling 120-hour sessions of chemotherapy, music was the only light of hope that kept her moving forward.  Since her recovery, Jade Berry has performed at the MUSCO Center with Placido Domingo, toured in Central and South America, and worked with accomplished producers in the industry such as Larry Reed, DaeOne, Brandon Friesen, Tito Rodriguez, Geoff Gibbs and Infinity Music in Colombia.  Check out Jade's episode to listen to her story.
