e223. The Cultural Impact of Ms. Marvel on Disney+

This Wednesday saw the season finale of Ms. Marvel on Disney+, a show that we have been thoroughly enjoying. However, there’s been a weird bit of reaction to Ms. Marvel and the MCU in general as of late. While the critical reviews of Ms. Marvel are overwhelmingly positive (it currently sits at a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes), some fans are arguing that the show is evidence of “MCU burnout”. Others, including many comic book fans, are complaining because of several key changes from the comic source material. And of course, there are a bunch of idiots complaining that it’s “just too woke!” And yet others are welcoming the series with open arms because of its charming portrayal of high school life and its strides in representation of South Asian and Muslim life and the seamless weaving of Pakistani history into the narrative. On today’s episode, Mav, Monica and Wayne welcome Muslim superhero scholar Dr. Safiyya Hossein, to recap the show and discuss its cultural impact on the MCU moving forward as well as comic book and genre media in general.
