“In the regular world, Halloween is when children dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.” At least, that’s what Mean Girls would have us believe. The internet tells us that women and girls’ Halloween costumes are getting sexier and sexier every year. This creates problems for women who don’t want to be “sexy random job here” and walk around in lingerie and stocking with a random prop. It creates problems for parents that don’t want their teenaged daughters wandering the streets in their underwear. And it creates a double standard about how Halloween works with boys and men’s costumes. But is this new, or has it always been the case? And causes it? Mav, Wayne and Hannah are joined by Mav’s former student (and fellow Halloween enthusiast) Brooklin Mincone to discuss Halloween, the male gaze, and the advent of the greatest Halloween costume of all time… Speedy RedMan!
