The Way through Baguazhang - 八卦掌道 - A podcast by Peter Hainzl

Recently I came across a manga titled "The Way of the Househusband" or Gokushufudou 極主夫道 by Oono Kousuke. It is a comic serialisation about a fictional Yakuza named Tatsu, who for reasons that are not spelled out but are inferred to, is now a househusband 主夫. It is a lively read, that a growing community of male martial artists can in their private way relate to. Well, maybe not the Yakuza part, but definitely the change of occupation part of it. While it is still quite small as a group, around the world there has been an organic movement for martial artists to do more with their art than just being a hobby or a business in the sense of running a dojo. Nor do these men want to commit to going down the path of doing their martial art as a sport or fighting for the money. These men are dedicating their lives to figuring out what their respective martial art means to them as a way of life. I am aware that there are women who are also doing this, but I am a man and this article is about being a Househusband dedicated to living the way of martial arts. While there are some people out there who insist that the man is supposed to be the breadwinner, very few of them know anybody in this situation as described above. Interestingly, most of the criticism comes from women. And not men. Men, more often than not, tend to wonder how it is possible to live such a way? In brief, it is possible to live like this if circumstances dictate it to be so. But when it is optional, then usually the man has income coming in from sources other than from the misses. In my example, yes the wife goes out and works while I stay home. But I also operate an online business and receive financial tokens of appreciation for quietly helping others using my Qigong and other expertise. On top of that, I teach Qigong twice a week at a community centre and I manage the household which gives me plenty of time to dedicate to the martial development of my daughters. Plus countless other activities that just would not be possible while working for others full-time or even part-time. Even being a boss has its limits where staff management is typically a full-time occupational hazard. So by not having a traditional job as such, we are able to quietly play a much bigger role within our respective communities. And I'm not talking about being a 'role model'. Fuck that imposed bullshit. I mean turning up and playing the game we want to play in the way we want to play it. I love doing my Baguazhang 八卦掌 internal martial art every day. And if I ever get back to working for somebody else, it will not be at the expense of my way of life. Especially now, that all the cool stuff is starting to manifest in my life. For those of you still struggling to come to terms with your circumstances and are not about to talk about it. Yet. I recommend that you get yourself a copy of this manga "The Way of the Househusband" or Gokushufudou 極主夫道 by Oono Kousuke. And have a good enjoyable read. Perhaps you'll get a few pointers from the Immortal Tatsu on how to improve your palm changing technique? For further details, the publisher is VIZ Media LLC, ISBN13:9781974709403
