178. Coronavirus COVID-19 and martial arts like qigong
The Way through Baguazhang - 八卦掌道 - A podcast by Peter Hainzl
The Coronavirus COVID-19 is related to the common cold. It is not the virus itself that kills people, but the added complications cause either by the onset of a secondary virus, and existing illness or lowered immunity cause by either diet or lifestyle factors. What scares the health authorities a lot is the fact that: 1) China and Iran covered up their initial findings; 2) The virus has been in circulation for a month longer than first thought; 3) The is a growing concern of under-reporting by countries around the world because they are unable to test their people; 4) And there is a bit of gambling involved regarding countries that are able to respond, in the hopes that the extreme measures taken will offset any deaths caused by indirect association. For point number four, what I mean is, say, the measures get too hard for a health care worker to assist the elderly. If the health care worker is a volunteer they may decide to abandon their station in favour of their own family first. For the elderly in need of constant care, this could be an indirect death sentence. I know this because as a Qigong instructor for elderly and retired, I have been going to infection outbreak trainings. And I've been observing the responses of volunteers to these new quarantine measures. I have been asked twice in the last two weeks alone, if I wish to continue the Qigong classes? I have informed the community centre that I will continue to run them until my students tell me otherwise. Because is about staying healthy and actively fit. And in these testing times it gives all of us hope in the future and hope from the past, in that many of the Qigong masters and Gungfu masters lived during times far worse than now. So I implore you to keep doing your forms and katas, and delve within to the answers you seek because a form or Kata is a 4-dimensional manual on how to prosper in times like now. Right now one's health is at a premium and typically in China at least, a Qigong or Gungfu master tended to be healthier than those around them. For those of you, who only want to fight as a martial artist or dream everynight of being the hero in some war, how about using your martial training to take care of your families and neighbours first. Your inner strength and fortitude makes you a Pillar.
