Chris Campion Interview Episode 31

Matt Crawford speaks with author Chris Campion about his book, The War Is Here. July 1967, after the arrest, beating and imprisonment of cab driver John Smith by local police, the city of Newark erupted in protest and retaliation. First by the mostly African American community and then by the Newark police and the National Guard. Over five days, 26 civilians would be killed by police gunfire with thousands of rounds fired. Bud Lee, a 26-year-old self-taught novice photographer for LIFE magazine would capture these images. Campion has compiled those images here, along with a forward from the current mayor of Newark Ras J. Baraka and his own essay. This is a book that will viscerally change its reader. I hope you will all pick it up, read it and have a conversation about it.
