November 7th is National Cancer awareness day & keeping this in mind we have a very special guest today- Prof. Shashanka Mohan Bose, former Senior Professor and Head of Surgery, Joint Medical Superintendent, and Officer–In-charge of the Emergency Department of PGI, Chandigarh, is one of the most well-known and eminent surgeons in India. He has been serving the country for about 55 years; his vast experience and expertise have made him a popular figure. In PGI, he has been undertaking Patient Care, Teaching, Research, and also Administrative responsibilities – he was practically on every committee, in many as a Chairperson. He has been the first one in northern India to start pioneering work in Breast ConservationSurgery and Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer, the first one in PGI to start Laparoscopic surgery, Mini Cholecystectomy, Stapler Haemorrhoidectomy. He is the first one in the country to initiate Non-operative Management of Haemoperitoneum due to abdominal injury. Prof. Bose is a real blend of excellence in patient care, teaching, and research the three arms of medical science, and has received recognition in all. He is a popular medical teacher and has delivered lectures all over the country and has been a Visiting Professor at a number of foreign universities. Dr. Bose is one of the highest decorated surgeons in the country, having received three National awards - Dr.B.C.Roy National Award as Eminent Medical Teacher, MCI’s National Award for outstanding work in Medical Research, and National Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology for Outstanding work in the sphere of Communication. Dr. Bose is a person with multifarious interests, his health education book Cancer has been published by Govt of India agency and has been already translated into 7 regional languages. During the last four years he has published a number of books – Winners of Breast Cancer, stories of Courage, Grit and Courage, both in English and Hindi, His Autobiography - Memoirs Of a Surgeon– Beyond Incisions, Blood, and Sweat has become very popular. The top publisher of the world Springer Nature has recently published his reference book Breast Cancer – Comprehensive Management. · Dr. Bose continues his surgical practice; patients from far and wide continue to seek his advice; and he continues to provide multimodality health care treatment by undertaking major operations, giving Chemotherapy, and spreading the message of Cancer Awareness.
