In this closing talk from the last day of Spring Practice Period Sesshin, the faculty of the practice period weave together final reflections on the vows and actions of true bodhisattvas. Sensei Monshin shares a moving story from Bryan Stevenson’s book “Just Mercy” about an unnamed woman who lost her grandson to violence transforming into what Stevenson calls a “stone catcher” – someone who catches the stones people cast at each other. Sensei Shinzan explores teachings from Shantideva, emphasizing how mindfulness reveals true contentment, leading us beyond habitual dissatisfaction. Lastly, Sensei Ryotan offers practical guidance for practice in everyday life, reminding us that “wherever you put your foot on the earth is the monastery.” She suggests creating home altars, regular sitting practices, mindful meals, and using gathas throughout the day. The talk concludes with a recitation of the Way of the Bodhisattva, reinforcing our commitment to compassionate action in the world.
