Ellen Gabriel on Importance of Traditional Governance

In Episode 47, Mohawk warrior Ellen Gabriel talks to us about the importance of traditional Indigenous governing systems and laws in protecting the lands for our peoples and all living things. She shares her insights on the issues being covered in the media in relation to Wet'suwet'en Nation and the use of their traditional laws and governments to protect their lands from pipelines. Ellen has a great deal of experience in this issue as she was chosen by the People of the Longhouse and her community of Kanehsatà:ke to be their spokesperson during the 1990 “Oka” Crisis; to protect the Pines from the expansion of a 9 hole golf course in “Oka” and the removal of Kanien’kehá:ka ancestors from their burial grounds.
