Ep 70: Julien Baker

Why Not Both - A podcast by Pam Shaffer

Categories:

Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer and produced by writer and photographer Laura Studarus.  For our fourth season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives. Any conversation that starts with microphone inquires and ends with jokes about praxis is bound to be fascinating, so it is not surprising to hear that we loved our multi-faceted chat with Julien Baker. As a songwriter, Baker muses on the idea that personal narratives are important not only to understand ourselves but to have empathy for others, which is especially important when sorting out a queer identity in a culture dominated by heteronormativity. While our culture keeps moving faster than we could ever process, Baker is making peace with the idea that each time we think we have it all figured out, another question arises, and that's part of the joy of being an artist and a human being after all.
