Today’s guest Jumi Akinfenwa is a music supervisor and freelance journalist and in this episode draws our attention to the disproportionate representation of Black people as artists versus commercial decision makers in the music industry. We talk about the response of brands to the Black Lives Matter protests and the compounding system changes that need to be addressed to make long-term change. Jumi tells us about her initiative ‘Make Noise’ which exists to encourage the creative industries to be more vocal about industry wide inequality and create space for creative expression which ultimately requires artists to fail as well as flourish, a privilege that isn't necessarily afforded to all. Jumi concludes: “we won’t unpack centuries of inequality in a few weeks… we need to know that you still have this at the top of your agenda in 10, 20, 50 years time.” This conversation was recorded on 9th June 2020.
