Since September 1941, Leningrad had been under siege. However, by the following year, the Soviets were turning the tide of the war, and launched a counter-offensive to retake Leningrad. On January 12, more than 4,500 guns opened up on the Germans. On January 18, the siege had been broken. The Red Army successfully regained the city by the end of January.
