105. Weight & Invisibility

Life After Diets - A podcast by Sarah Dosanjh / Stefanie Michele - Wednesdays

The intersection of weight and visibility is discussed at length in this episode. Weight can make us feel more visible or less visible because it is something our culture pays attention to. When we lose weight, we are "seen"; when we gain weight, we may become invisible. We discuss this topic from psychodynamic and somatic perspectives; how might our weight be protecting us? Note: this episode is not suggesting that weight is pathological. Body sizes are diverse among humans depending on a multitude of factors, and largely dependent on genetics. This episode looks at weight, trauma, and visibility as one part of a larger picture. We discuss: Unwanted sexual attention Weight loss as a way of being “good” for parents Weight as a “nice” identity; what if we lose weight and become more threatening to other females? I have a conflicting desire to be seen and not to be seen Why would we be afraid of meeting our own needs? If we are visible – or exposed – what if we can’t find safety in our hiding again?
