S8 Ep3: Oscar Piastri on being more popular than Lando at Silverstone

Monday Mile with Aimee Fuller - A podcast by Monday Mile - By Aimee Fuller - Mondays

This week on Monday Mile we travel South to Chichester, to link up with one of the most promising young drivers in motorsport at Goodwood Festival of Speed. I’ll give you a clue, he’s not the first Australian driver to sit in the hot seat at McLaren F1. He has spent the last few weekends fighting off Lewis Hamilton for position on track, and is just fresh off his 4th place at Silverstone Grand Prix.  He’s also just secured another top 5 in Hungary - this week I’m talking to Oscar Piastri. We chat all things F1, from his rise and very successful career through the junior ranks and the importance of that success in Formula 3 and F2, to prepare you for the circuit. From his first experience sitting in an F1 car , and nearly putting his head through the steering wheel to securing his place at McLaren F1.  Oscar shares his passion and competitive nature by doing everything to the best of his ability and how aiming for the top of motorsport was his only option. We also discuss the importance in education and how being a World class athlete does require and element of academic ability to perform your best. “I was competitive academically, we’re all very capable of driving at almost the same speed as each other, in F1 half of the game is having a brain free enough to think about other stuff apart from driving”. We delve into his new found fame on the grid off the back of his result at Silverstone, and how the British public were chanting his name over Lewis Hamilton. He shares an open account of how nothing can prepare you for the media attention as one of the only 20 drivers in the world to have a seat in F1, and the responsibilities that come along with the job. Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. How do elite athletes find the motivation to kick start their week come rain or shine? How do celebrities deliver no matter what the time of day? What knowledge can they pass on? Each episode drops on a Monday morning as a bitesize piece of content and weekly dose of motivation - right when you need it. Aimee will meet each of her guests for a walk and a chat and over the course of the mile she will find out how they cope on a Monday morning - their idiosyncrasies, breakfast routines, alarm noises - and how, when they need to, find the motivation to kick-on through the week. Sharing some of Britain's greatest athletes, entrepreneurs, doctors, authors and broadcasters ’ secrets on self-motivation, candid thoughts on what they struggle with and a sideways look at some of their more unusual morning habits.
