The Context of White Supremacy hosts the premier study session on Angie Thomas's bestselling young adult novel, The Hate U Give. Written in response to the 2009 police killing of Oscar Grant, Thomas's work "debuted at the top of The New York Timesâ??s Young Adult best-seller list, and has drawn ecstatic praise from critics, librarians, book sellers and prominent young-adult novelists," says The Times's Alexandra Alter. Thomas's work has been so successful, it's being converted to a major motion picture starring The Hunger Games's Amandla Stenberg. The novel follows a young black girl who attends a predominantly White school. Unfortunately, a tragic arrangement - a "romantic" relationship between a black female and White male, is a significant aspect of the book. Much of the critical acclaim focuses on how this volume honestly interrogates the violence of White Supremacy. An educator and C.O.W.S. listener said The Hate U Give is being heavily promoted in schools, where many black girls and boys are required to read it.
