The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 3rd study session on Angie Thomas's bestselling young adult novel, The Hate U Give. Authored in response to the 2009 police killing of Oscar Grant, Thomas's work "debuted at the top of The New York Times's Young Adult best-seller list, and has drawn ecstatic praise from critics, librarians, book sellers and prominent young-adult novelists," says The Times's Alexandra Alter. The international acclaim for the book is so robust, the novel is being converted to a major motion picture starring The Hunger Games's Amandla Stenberg. Last week's session follows the aftermath of the police killing of Starr's friend Khalil. The disastrous state of black mental health was on display as Starr struggled to sleep and dreamed about her numerous dead friends. The plight of black dysfunction and death is juxtaposed to Starr's academic life, which is brimming with perky White kids. In addition to a White boyfriend, Starr reveals she has a crush on one of her White female's "perfect" hair. Briefly, Starr contrasts the paleness of her White lover with the melanin deficiency of the officer who killer her friend.
