The Fasting Highway - A podcast by Graeme Currie - Sundays

I have been married for almost twenty years to a wonderful, kind-hearted man of German/Italian descent and we have three teenage kids: two daughters and a son. A few of my favorite pastimes are gardening, photography, traveling, flower arranging, taking walks in nature, reading, learning foreign languages, and just spending time with my family. I have also always loved cooking and for a few years was an avid baker and cake decorator too. Being a true foodie at heart and preparing and indulging in decadent meals and desserts all the time, weight management was always an issue for me. Considering I am only five feet tall, I don't have the luxury of carrying a lot of weight without it "showing" easily. To put it shortly, trying to become fit was a major struggle. I also told myself I loved food too much to be able to lose any weight and keep it off long term. Additionally, being pregnant three times within five years and not fully getting rid of the "baby weight" three times in a row compounded my weight problem. Eventually, I managed to reach obesity by the age of 43. I had given up trying, I didn't even own a scale anymore and had no clue what I weighed. I knew, however, that my clothing size had been steadily climbing up: from 6 to 8, to 10, to 12, reaching 14 in the summer of 2019. Then, that Christmas I ended up having to visit an orthopedist for a frozen shoulder and needed to be weighed in the doctor's office. I was shocked to find out I had reached 172lbs! I was heavier than my six-foot husband who weighed 168lbs at the time. At that moment, I knew I had to do something, soon. I happened to mention my health concerns with a family member over the Christmas holidays and he shared that he had done intermittent fasting that same year. He had successfully lost 35lbs doing IF and suggested I try it out too. I was intrigued. I had free time because I was on winter break from school, so I spent a few days watching YouTube videos on intermittent fasting, researching as much as I could, and decided to give it a try and see how it goes for me. So on January 1st, 2020 I began following a 16:8 IF protocol, eating two meals and a snack between 11AM and 6PM. The rest of the time, I drank different kinds of herbal and fruit teas and water. I April, I read "Delay, Don't Deny" by Gin Stephens and learned about the clean fast, as well as different IF protocols. I switched to strictly black or green tea, which are clean fast approved, and transitioned to a one meal a day lifestyle. I also began to really appreciate food as fuel for my body and started turning my OMAD into a special occasion that is rich in nutrients and a delight for all the senses. By October of that year I had lost 55lbs and have been maintaining that weight loss for over 15 months now. IF has truly been life changing for me!
